Seven Things Every User Should Know

1. Rebooting before calling for help.

It should be a comfort to most that rebooting your computer fixes a multitude of both real and perceived errors. Even if a reboot does not solve the problem, the mere fact that the problem recurs after a reboot can give the significant diagnostic information.

2. Reporting a computer problem properly.

It’s important to provide information that will help expedite the resolution of your problem. For example, always provide the text of the error message. Be sure to tell your tech what operating system you are using and the type of hardware you’re running. Be able to express what you were doing when the problem occurred and whether or not you can reproduce the problem again and again by the same steps. It's always better to give more information that less!

3. Keeping password and/or passphrase safe.

There is little point in having a password or passphrase if it's written down in an unsecured location or shared among friends and/or co-workers. Don’t keep your password on a post-it by your computer, don’t write it on the back of your hand and don’t keep it on a sliver of paper in your wallet!

4. Constructing secure passwords and pass-phrases.

Constructing a REAL password/phrase has become as much art as science. Typically, names of family members, sequencing numbers, and obvious words and phrases should be avoided. Random numerals and a mix of cases, punctuation, and spaces are encouraged. However, there must be a balance between creating a password/phrase that works vs. creating one so complex that you end up writing it down! Doing so defeats the whole point of creating a password/phrase in the first place!

For fear of making a password so complicated that I forget it or God forbid, consider writing it down, I prefer a passphrase. It tends to be longer than a password, more complex and surprisingly easier to remember! Your phrase can be something more personal, which will help in the remembering but be certain that it’s NOT a straight forward sentence. For example, your phrase might be: “Timy walked at 2” Note, how I intentionally misspelled Timmy. Also, I used spacing and a numerical number rather than the word “two.” This password is much more complex than: timmy2

5. Practicing safe computing while traveling.

When taking your laptop, PDA, or whatever on the road you’ll have to be extra careful to prevent unauthorized access. Remote access tokens should not be carried in the same case as the computer and access codes, names, and passwords should not be written down! Another safe guard for your sensitive data is to keep it encrypted and/or stored on removable data storage devices and kept separate from the computer. Logical? If you’re device is stolen you’ve made it much harder (if not impossible) for the thief to gain access to your vital information!

6. Preventing loss of data.

There is no such thing as backup elves! Be aware that backups don't happen by magic and if you delete a file before it has been backed up you may never see it again! Backing up your data should become a regular routine.

7. Protecting against viruses, phishing, malware, and other nasties.

While you may think your installed anti-virus software has the responsibility protecting your system, no AV is 100% foolproof. You must still be vigilant in keeping your computer safe. If you don’t how to identify phishing or malicious e-mails from legitimate emails, ask for help. There are a few basic rules to observe to keep your system safe:

1. Never open e-mails from unknown sources.
2. Do not open unidentified attachments.
3. Do not turn off any protection on their computer.
4. Stay on top of antivirus updates. When your anti-virus software asks to update itself, don’t keep putting it off.

Computer Tips and Tricks: System Tweaks

Disable System Restore

You can gain a lot of drive space by disabling System Restore. (You should already have a backup regimen in place before you do this.) In Vista, right-click My Computer, select Advanced system settings, click the System Protection tab, and uncheck any drives. In XP, right-click My Computer, then under System Tasks, click on "View system information." Click on the System Restore tab and click the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives" to disable it.

Configure Windows Update

Windows Update is great, but if it's set on autopilot, it will download updates that require a reboot, then pester you forever to install them, and eventually reboot on its own. Change the Windows Update settings (in the Windows Security section of the Control Panel) to download updates but ask you whether to install them.

Disable Delete Confirmation

You can disable the confirmation that pops up whenever you delete something by right-clicking the Recycle Bin and selecting Properties. Uncheck the delete confirmation box, click Apply and then OK, and you're done. Also, you can bypass the Recycle Bin entirely by holding down the Shift key while deleting files.

Disable Windows Animations

Sliding Window animations look cool, but you can improve system performance by disabling them completely. Right-click My Computer and go to Properties. In Vista, select Advanced system settings, or click the Advanced tab in XP. Click Settings in the performance box and uncheck any box that says animate, slide, or fade.

Create a Custom Toolbar

If you're constantly accessing a particular folder, you can add it to your taskbar for quick access. Right-click the taskbar and scroll to Toolbars, then select New Toolbar. It will open an Explorer window, so browse to your folder and select it. It's also handy to add My Computer as a toolbar.

How Long Has Your System Been Running?

Here's how you verify system uptime:

Click Start | Run and type cmd to open a command prompt.

At the prompt, type systeminfo

Scroll down the list of information to the line that says System Up Time.

This will tell you in days, hours, minutes and seconds how long the system has been up. This works on windows XP I don't have Vista so i cant tell you how to do it if you have Vista but the process should be similar if not the same.

Some Tips If your Pendrive Infected With Virus

If the storage device and the virus was not detected by antivirus, there is no choice but to format. To do this follow the steps mentioned..

To prevent a Pendrive can infect the PC on which we connect, we can protect ourselves by following these steps:

1. Click Start, Run
2. Within the window, enter the word REGEDIT
3. We will go to the following string: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Polices\Explorer
5. Locate the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value and select it with the left button of our mouse
6. Select the Modify option
7. Modify the value for this 0 × 00000095

This change will prevent viruses from running automatically when you connect a USB device into our PC. This way we keep the infection.

Speedup your Browsing with DNS setting

There are most of the time when you browse to a website through your computer's default browser, in this situation your computer to sends an information back and forth, which is obviously done. From this information it deals with resolving the site name to an appropriate IP address, these are the stuffs that tcp/ip really deals with it. This is a DNS information and it is used so that next time you will not need to ask for the site location every time when you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows 2000 has an efficient DNS cache, you can increase overall performance by increasing their size. This can be done by the registry entries.

You need to do the following methods as mentioned below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"ServiceDll"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,\
00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,\
64,00,6e,00,73,00,72,00,73,00,6c,00,76,00,72,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,\
00

"MaxCacheTtl"=dword:00002a30
"MaxNegativeCacheTtl"=dword:00000000
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

You need to make a new text file and then rename it to "dnscache.reg". After that copy and paste all the above into it and save it. Finally merge it into the registry.

Anti-Virus Test

Open notepad and paste this:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Save it as eicar.com.

Your Anti-virus will then either not let you save it of when you have saved it will remove it for you.

Don't worry about it. European Institute for Computer Anti-virus Research (EICAR) have got people to program Anti-Virus to recognise this as a threat (even tough it's completely harmless)

10 reasons why PC crashes!

10 reasons why PCs crash U must Know

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is
DriverGuide.com (printer drivers, cdrom drivers, modem drivers, sound drivers, mouse drivers, monitor drivers, etc.). If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

 5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates (
McAfee-Antivirus Software and Intrusion Prevention Solutions). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( Symantec - AntiVirus, Anti-Spyware, Endpoint Security, Backup, Storage Solutions).

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

 8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from
Registry Cleaner, Optimize Windows with our System Utilities | Macecraft Software

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from
ComputerNerd.com ~Welcome ! ! Best Price--Xenion iSD01 6 watt docking speaker system for iPod ! or coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

Facebook Tips & Tricks part 3

Facebook Ads Campaigns.

Facebook Ads provide two ways to advertise on pages of Facebook. You can create an ad campaign that links to a landing page within your Web site, or you can advertise something on Facebook, such as your new Business Page or an application you have developed.

You can also employ a Social ad. This shows your image and text alongside the social action you take on Facebook pages.

Facebook Ads are targeted, meaning you choose the location, gender, interests, relationship status and other demographics of your target audience.

In creating a Facebook Ad campaign you will need to decide which type of ad you want to run and provide the link the ad will lead visitors to. The Ad title is restricted to 25 characters while the Ad text (body) must fit in 135 characters. If you choose to include a photo, it needs to be 110 by 80 pixels.

Facebook Ads can be run on a Pay for Clicks (CPC) or Pay for Views (CPM) model. During the ad creation process, you set your daily ad budget and the maximum bid, which is the most you are willing to pay per click. CPC ads are displayed in Face book's Ad Space, Home Page (or both), while CPM ads are shown only in the Ad Space. Facebook selects the best ad to run based on the cost per click or impression and ad performance.

Facebook Ad Campaign Demographic Page: Target your audience.
After creating the ads you want to run, Facebook will approve your ad for use and suggest a max bid if you have bid too low. Through your Ad Management Page, Facebook provides ad data so you can track your progress, change the audience, or adjust other metrics as the campaign progresses.

Tips for Small Businesses

Facebook Ads were launched back in November 2007, but most online reports to date still indicate that targeted Facebook Ads are not as successful as using other campaigns – most notably, Google AdWords. If you are hesitant to burn up your ad budget on Facebook just yet, try creating and promoting your free business page first.
 A small e-commerce site owner can also try Googling for "free Facebook Ad credits." These appear ever so often to entice advertisers to try Facebook Ads. You can take advantage of them to try it out before investing your own advertising budget.

Facebook How-To Guide: Create Business Pages and Ad Campaigns

Social networking site Facebook is used by more than 150 million people to share personal information with friends online. The site celebrated its fifth-year anniversary yesterday and is continuing to attract members with demographics that could serve e-tailers well in terms of extending market reach and increasing branding.

The Web research firm Hitwise reports that overall Facebook was the fifth-ranked Web site in terms of total market share of visits in January 2009. Furthermore, the time spent on Facebook by users has continued to increase and reached an average visit time of just over 21 minutes in January 2009.

More good news: When compared to 2008, there has been a pronounced shift in the age of the Facebook audience. According to Hitwise, visitors aged 18 to 24 represented a 42 percent share of visits for the four weeks ending Jan. 26, 2008, but this number dropped to 24 percent for the four weeks ending Jan. 24, 2009. Now visitors aged 25 to 34 make up the largest share of visits with 27 percent, with 18 to 24 and 35 to 44 closely following with respective shares of 24 percent and 23 percent.

Facebook is aware that e-commerce site owners may want to capitalize on Facebook traffic, so they allow members to create free Facebook Business pages or initiate pay-per-click advertising campaigns.
Leveraging Facebook business options can provide a new channel for your customers to interact and at the same time help you acquire new customers as your Facebook fans spread the word about your business to their friends.

In this Facebook how-to guide, we will show you how to use two of the business solutions offered by Facebook. First, we'll walk through the steps you need to take to create your own Facebook Business Page (also called a fan page) and then discuss the tasks involved in creating a Facebook Ad campaign, which can be used to send visitors to your Web site or new Facebook Business Page.

 Getting Started: Get Your Business on Facebook

To get started you will need to visit the Facebook Advertising page. Here you will find tabs to access the following business options:
  • Advertising: Businesses use this tab to create adverts that will run on Facebook pages
  • Pages: Businesses use Pages to create a presence on Facebook that will let others join your page as a fan
  • Connect: Facebook connect lets users seamlessly connect their Facebook account and information to your site.
  • Facebook Share: Design a button for your site to make joining your Facebook Page easy for your customers
 How to Publish a Facebook Business Page

 The best way to start is with creating a Page for your business. Those who have created a personal Facebook profile will find the process pretty simple, but the step-by-step form pages will also make creating a Business Page painless for those new to Facebook.

You will need to have basic business information ready before creating the Page — decide on a page name and find any images you want to upload. Remember that your company logo is best for the profile picture. When you create the page you will need to include a description of your Web site, product, brand, or company.

With this information handy, simply choose one of three categories for your Business: Local Business (and the industry), Brand or Product, or choose if this will be a Page for a public band, artist, or other public figure. Once you select a category, you are required to enter the business name. When you submit this information, you will then see a Business Page that shares some resemblance to personal profile pages on Facebook.

In step two, you will want to upload your business logo, provide information about your business, contact information, hours of operation (if you have a retail or local office), and a general description that describes your business. As you add more details about your business you can view the changes live on the page you are creating. This is all you need to publish a basic Business Page on Facebook.

Customize Applications and Business Details

On your Facebook business page you will see applications that you can include on the page you have just created. When viewing your Business Page, there is an Edit Page link on the top right. Here you can customize all options from a single admin screen.

In the previous step we took care of the profile picture, basic, and detailed information boxes. Now, you will need to customize the applications that you want to use. Each Application has a small edit option by the title, letting you remove any of the available applications or customize the application to your liking.

Here are the basic Facebook Applications for Business pages:
  • Discussion Boards: Enable your fans to get their ideas out into the open. Discussion boards let you know exactly what your fans and customers think and want.
  • Events: Organize gatherings or let people know about your upcoming business events.
  • Information: Manage settings for the Information application.
  • Notes: Share your business news, or engage your fans through written entries.
  • Photos: Upload photos to your page and allow your fans to share photos on your page also.
  • Reviews: Fans and customers can leave honest opinions about your business.
  • Video: A high-quality video platform for pages on Facebook.
  • Wall: The Wall is an open forum for your fans or friends to leave comments, thoughts, and ideas about you on your Page or Profile.

Facebook Business Page Demographics.
The last option you will need to use is the Settings area. This is where you edit country restrictions, place age restrictions and change the published status of your business page. When you are happy with the way your Business page looks, you click the Publish this page link.

Tracking and Gathering Business Page Fans

Within 48 hours of publishing your page, you will be able to access 'Insights,' which is Facebook-collected data about how your business page is being used.

Here you can track page views, number of fans, removed fans, wall posts, discussion topics, reviews, photo views and more.

After you have successfully created a Business Page, you can link to it from your own Web site, e-mail campaigns, or encourage your own personal Facebook friends to become a fan of your page.

Remember, when a personal friend becomes a new fan, that message is displayed as a notification to all of your friend's friends. Similar to word-of-mouth marketing, this is a great way to bring Facebook users to your new Business page.

Another option to leverage Facebook traffic is targeted Facebook Ads, which you can use to send Facebook users to your own Web site or to your newly created Facebook Business Page.

Facebook Tips & Tricks part 1

Three Ways to Customize Your Business Facebook Page Static FBML, SocialRSS, Facebook Events, and More

One of the challenges in having a Facebook Page — the name that Facebook uses to identify a business profile — is being able to make it look less like Facebook and incorporate more of your own brand identity on the Page. There are a number of Facebook applications (apps for short) that you can customize to display your own business content, links, and images.

Get a Custom Look and Feel with Static FBML

One of the best apps for business Facebook pages is Static FBML.  This Facebook-developed application lets you create and display FBML (Facebook Markup Language) boxes and tabs on your Page.

One of the easiest ways for a small business to take advantage of FMBL is to create boxes that will display content and links to direct your fans — Facebook users who subscribe to your Page — back to your Web site. For example, you may want to show your logo and offer hyperlinks to specific content or products on your site. You can use FBML to invite fans to join your mailing list, get a discount on your site or even highlight a special promotion or contest you're currently running in the box.

When you add the FBML application to your Page, you simply click "Edit," enter a title for the box, and then paste in the HTML code you want to render on your Facebook Page. If you have a lot of experience with HTML and scripting, you will be able to do a lot more with Static FBML — but even if you have just basic HTML skills, you can create an attractive and well-branded box for your Page.

Use Static FBML on your Facebook Page to display branded content, images and links.

 In Figure 1, you can see an example of FBML in use on the Webopedia.com Facebook Page. This image shows a side-by-side view of how you customize the application to include your own HTML code, and how that code is rendered in a branded and customized box on your Facebook Page.

 Display Custom Content with RSS Feeds

Another way to customize your Facebook Page is to display your RSS feeds. This can help automate the process of providing new content and updates to your fans each day. Social RSS (formerly RSS-Connect) is one of several apps for RSS feeds.

On your Facebook Page, you can display Social RSS on your Wall or as a Boxes tab. It will automatically update, and your fans can also subscribe to your feed right from the Facebook app.

Once you add Social RSS to your Page, again you can click "Edit" and customize the app with your own feed URL.  Social RSS offers a number of feed settings. You can title the feed (e.g. use your site or blog name), choose how often to automatically check for updates, customize display options for the Facebook Box, and choose to send updates to your Facebook Page.

SocialRSS lets you display your site or blog RSS feed on your Facebook Wall.

In Figure 2, you can see an example of SocialRSS in use on the Webopedia.com Facebook Page. This image shows a side-by-side view of how you customize the RSS Feed application to include your own blog or Site feed URL, and how your customized Social RSS box will appear on your Facebook Page.
 Interact with Fans Using Facebook Events
If your business is holding a special event — perhaps an open house or an online sale — you can use Facebook Events to tell your fans all about it. You can access Facebook Events by clicking the calendar icon under your Status Box. Once the Event details window opens, you provide a title, a location and the date and time for the event.

When your event is published on your Facebook Page, fans will have the opportunity to RSVP by selecting one of three options; Attending, Not attending, or Maybe Attending. Fans can also attach an RSVP note and share your Event on their own Facebook Profile.

Use Static FBML on your Facebook Page to display branded content, images and links.

More Facebook Apps for Business

While these apps let you maximize your own brand identity on Facebook, there are other apps that you can use.  While most Facebook apps include advertising links, if you find an app that that has some value for your fans, you can add it on a secondary Boxes Tab so it doesn't detract from your own branding on your Page's Wall tab.

To view thousands of other Facebook apps, choose "Edit Page" from your Facebook Page, and then select "Browse More Applications." You can also search for apps from your personal Facebook Profile.

Google search tips

Below are some basic tips as well as some secrets that can be used on Google to help improve your search results and find things you may have never thought of.
  1. Group your search query to find better results. For example, if you're searching for computer help, you'll find better results if you search for an exact phrase by surrounding it in quotes: "computer help".
  2. If a lot of your results have keywords you're not search for use a minus sign. For example, if you're looking for computer help but don't want pages containing Windows type: "computer help" -windows
  3. Google supports number ranges, for example, if you're searching for computer help between the year 2000 to 2005 you can type: "Computer help" 2000..2005
  4. See the Google operators page, which lists dozens of the available operators Google allows. For example, the below search would search for URL that contains the word computer: allinurl: computer
  5. Visit the Google Features page, which lists hundreds of different examples of the type of things you can find through Google and how to find them.
  6. See our Google dictionary definition for a listing of dozens of other Google services.
Below are some more advance searches people are commonly looking for and what they do.

intitle:index.of + mp3 -asp -html -htm -php -pls -txt

In the above example, when entered into Google this search result looks for any index of MP3 files that does not contain the standard web pages like HTML, PHP, etc. or any other non-related pages. In the above example you can replace mp3 with avi or other file extension to search for these types of files.

intitle:index.of + mp3 "" -asp -html -htm -php -pls -txt

In the above example you could replace "" with the artists name, track, group, or name of the MP3 you're looking for. Keep in mind when downloading MP3 that you should own the track or song you're downloading otherwise it's considered illegal.

inurl:"ViewerFrame?Mode="

In the above simple example, Google will return results of insecure live web cams and with some of the services even allow you to control the cameras over the Internet.
The above three examples are just a few more advanced searches used to help illustrate how many different things can be found through Google.
